I had left the Shanty Crew after two years and had gone back into Folk music. My main club had become the Tudor at Chesham. I met Mike Stephenson who I became good friends with. One night at the Tudor, Mike said he would like to record my voice, natuarally I was flattered and jumped at the chance. So I started to get a set of songs together. My main influences at the time were the late Johnny Collins and (the still very much alive) Dave Weber, both brilliant singers and the latter an excellent songwriter. I asked Dave if I could record two of his songs "Watch and Chain" and "Bonnet and Shawl" I was really pleased when Dave said he didn't have a problem with that. Mike was pleased when I said I would like to record "Fisherman's daughter" The rest were songs I had picked up along the way. The last three were songs I had been listening to since long before I came onto the folk music scene and had special memories for me. Some I picked up off Johnny who I very much admired at the time and still do. John welcomed me into the folk world, gave me a lot of good advice and generally encouraged me to learn my craft and I will be eternally grateful to him for that.
I needed a chorus for this venture and in Kaye O'Connor-Tilley, Min Dawson, Clive Carey and Bob Templeman I could not have found four better people to sing with. I had become friends with them at the Tudor, in fact I am pretty sure it was Kaye that first welcomed me into the club and introduced me around. From the off their voices blended into a close harmony that is so essential in a cappella singing. I knew after the first rehearsal that I had made the right choice of people to sing with on this CD. So in November 2004 we gathered in Mike's Studio and this is the result. Hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it.
As on all my cd's you can download all the pages and make your own cd in whatever format you wish.
